Some of you may be interested in this bird's story so I thought I would document some of the events. The bird, a male Redtail was found at the base of the nest tree at brancher age of about 6 weeks. The left leg appeared to be injured (possible break) and there was numerous flight feathers with serious shock marks. I was asked by my government to see what could be done and if possible care for the bird. I received the bird on July 3, 2011. Weight 1000gr.

On July 4 the bird was taken to one of our local vets (we do not have an avian specialist here or anywhere for 500 km. The bird's left leg was x-rayed and found to have a very
clean fracture midway of the tibia and had no use of the toes on that leg. The leg was pinned and taken home for a month of rest and time for the leg to knit.
(I'm sorry I don't have photos from the first vet visit as I was to stressed and nervous to bother taking photos.

July 5 with the help of a fellow falconer (we are the only two currently practicing falconers for several hundred km. the right leg was fitted with an anklet and jesse and the bird was tethered with a very short leash to a rotating portable bow perch I design years ago. Not an ideal management set-up but for a "one legged" raptor of fledging age the options are few if you want to protect the feathers, the leg and minimize movement. The hawk barely put any weight on the injured leg but preferred to rest the tarsus on the perch while standing on the toes of the good leg. With days of good food the bird seemed more alert and several of the damaged flight feathers fell out. (I will post photos of them in the future).
